There are no federal laws governing home inspectors. Home Inspectors are regulated only by the individual states. Since the laws vary from state to state – and some states don’t even have home inspection regulations – How can you be sure that your inspector is qualified, experienced, and trustworthy? One way is through home inspector associations.  Some associations require minimum training, education, experience, and adherence to ethical standards – be sure to check out the home inspector associations to see what is required of the home inspector to receive certified member status.

Certified ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) Inspectors are professional home inspectors who have met the most rigorous technical and experience requirements in the industry.  An ASHI Certified Inspector must have performed a minimum of 250 fee paid home inspections conducted in accordance with the ASHI Standards of Practice, and passed two written exams.  Members must also obtain continuing education credits on a yearly basis.

As a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), I adhere to the association’s standards of practice and code of ethics.  You can find more information about ASHI at their website, www.ashi.org.
